BEACH SITES

Just a short 45 min boat ride from Kamiros Skala Port, Halki is one of those places where you don’t need a plan! It’s small, peaceful, and beautifully simple. With 5–6 hours free time, the idea is easy: swim, eat well, walk a little, and just enjoy the day.

Stroll around Nimporio

As you arrive to Halki Island, take a moment to note your departure time, then begin your visit with a relaxed walk along Halki’s charming harbor, known as Nimporio. Watch the colorful neoclassical houses reflecting in the water, small fishing boats gently coming and going, and fishermen quietly cleaning their nets as locals go about their day. Very quickly, you’ll feel how everything here moves at a slower pace—calm, simple, and unhurried—setting the tone for a truly relaxing island experience.

The first impression of Halki

Nimporio is the only village on the island and has fewer than 500 permanent residents.

Visit the Church of Agios Nikolaos & Wander the backstreets

Right by the harbor, the beautiful Church of Agios Nikolaos is worth a short stop. It’s the pride of the island, with the tallest bell tower in the whole Dodecanese—something you’ll spot even before arriving at the harbor. The church also stands out for its beautiful courtyard, decorated with traditional hohlakia—the classic pebble mosaics you’ll see across the islands.

Then step just behind the harbor, and the pace slows down even more. Quiet alleys and small everyday moments give you a glimpse of real island life. The pastel-coloured, Italianate mansions were built during the island’s grand sponge-fishing era and once belonged to wealthy captains.

Halki Town Hall and the famous Clock Tower

As you explore, you’ll also notice the elegant white Halki Town Hall, one of the most beautiful buildings on the island, standing proudly by the waterfront. This neoclassical white building reflects the island’s prosperity in the 19th century. Beside it stands the imposing stone-built Clock Tower. Take your time here—this is the perfect place for photos.

The Clock Tower is known for its frozen time—it has been stuck at twenty past four for over 20 years!

Go for a swim – this is the highlight!

And at this point you can decide – which beach is going to be your next destination as swimming is the highlight of Halki—simple as that.

For an easy option, head to Pondamos Beach – Halki’s favorite & the only sandy one on the island, which already makes it special. Just a 10-15 minute slow walk from the harbor, it’s easy to reach and perfect for a relaxed swim. The water is crystal-clear and shallow, ideal for a gentle, carefree dip. Surrounded by beautiful views, with a small taverna and sunbeds nearby, it’s the kind of place where you arrive for a quick swim… and end up staying much longer.

The name “Pontamos” derives from the Greek word for “river”

If you prefer something quieter and even more crystal-clear, take the scenic walk to Ftenagia Beach. It is one of the most beautiful spots on Halki—and just a 15–20 minute walk from Nimporio. Follow the coastal path past the old sponge factory and the chapel of Agia Katerina, and you’ll find a peaceful pebble beach with some of the clearest water on the island. There’s also a small taverna and sunbeds nearby, making it easy to spend a few hours here without wanting to leave. As you settle onto the pebbles, the view opens out across the water toward Rhodes—large, slightly hazy, and surprisingly close. It’s a beautiful reminder that, even in this quiet little spot, you’re right in the heart of the Aegean.

From Sea to Plate – The Halki Way

After your swim, head back to the harbor and choose one of the seaside taverns. Fresh fish, grilled seafood, Greek salad, maybe a glass of wine—simple, delicious, and exactly what you need. Service is slow, but that’s part of the charm – Halki way. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the moment.

Lunch here is something to enjoy slowly

In between exploring, do as the locals do—take a quick dip using one of the front-yard ladders and jump straight into the crystal-clear water. Simple, refreshing, and very Halki

A simple ladder, a quiet corner, and the clearest water you’ve ever seen

Halki is small, peaceful, and beautifully simple. There are no big attractions or busy schedules—just scenic views, clear turquoise water, good food, and a slow island rhythm. With a few hours here, you don’t need a plan… just enjoy! Let’s go!
