Kallithea Springs greets you with one of the most beautiful fountains on Rhodes
An Ancient Retreat
Long before Rhodes became a favorite island getaway, the red-hued springs of Kallithea — known locally as tsilonero — were treasured by the ancient Greeks. As early as the 7th century BC, the waters were believed to be a divine gift from the gods, renowned for their healing powers. People traveled from far and wide to bathe in the sulphurous springs, seeking relief from ailments like arthritis, diabetes, malaria, and asthma. Throughout Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman times, Kallithea remained a sacred place of rejuvenation.

The healing properties of Kallithea’s waters have been recognized since antiquity
During the Ottoman period, Orthodox Christians, Muslims, and Jews gathered peacefully around the springs, reflecting the area’s uniquely multicultural spirit
Centuries later, during the Italian rule of Rhodes (1912–1943), Kallithea entered a new era of splendor. As part of a grand urban development plan, architects Pietro Lombardi and Armando Bernabiti designed a magnificent complex of domes, arches, and mosaics. The spa was officially inaugurated on July 1, 1929, in a ceremony attended by King Vittorio Emanuele himself — a symbol of its prestige and promise.
But history took a darker turn. During the German occupation, Kallithea was turned into a penitentiary, surrounded by barbed wire and minefields. After Rhodes joined Greece, the complex fell silent for decades, its beauty fading under time and neglect.

A shadow of its past glory
In 1999, hope returned. Led by Mayor Ioannis Iatridis, a decade-long restoration project began — and on July 1, 2007, exactly 78 years after its first inauguration, Kallithea Springs reopened. Today, it stands as a beloved symbol of renewal and cultural pride, welcoming visitors from all over the world.
Kallithea Springs Today
Although the spa waters have long dried up, the magic of Kallithea lives on. The fountain that once poured out healing waters still stands in the small Rotunda, a gentle reminder of its ancient past.

People come to this place in Rhodes for the special atmosphere
Now restored as an open-air museum by the sea, Kallithea Springs has become one of Rhodes’ most elegant landmarks — a monument that celebrates both heritage and modern tourism.
You’ll be amazed by how much there is still to discover in Kallithea.
A Masterpiece of Italian Design
The name Kallithea (Καλλιθέα) translates to “Good View”, and it couldn’t be more fitting.
Italian architect Pietro Lombardi designed Kallithea Springs as a graceful fusion of early 20th-century Italian and Moorish styles. Elegant arches, ornate fountains, and pebble-stone mosaics create a setting that feels both timeless and serene. The black-and-white mosaic paths form intricate floral and geometric patterns, while the outer walls are decorated with sea-inspired designs.

The Grand Rotunda is surrounded by exquisite pebble mosaics
At the heart of the complex lies the Great Rotunda, surrounded by exquisite pebble mosaics that leave visitors in awe. Inside, a small exhibition showcases historical photographs that tell the story of the Baths of Kallithea and their remarkable restoration.
The site also regularly hosts art and photography exhibitions, continuing its long tradition of inspiring creativity.

Kallithea’s Natural Beauty
Encircling the small bay, lush gardens bloom with palm and pine trees, fragrant herbs, and colorful Mediterranean flowers like lavender and bougainvillea. Even in the peak of summer, this oasis remains green and vibrant — a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike. The romantic atmosphere makes Kallithea Springs one of the most popular wedding and event venues in Rhodes. Many couples choose to exchange vows inside the Rotunda, surrounded by the soft sound of the sea and the delicate pebble-stone mosaics.

The shallow area is ideal for families, while deeper waters attract divers and sailing excursions. The bay is often dotted with yachts and boats stopping for a refreshing swim in this breathtaking setting.
