In this Full day Guided tour we selected our most favorite places on the island—picturesque Eleousa village and it’s historic surroundings, a unique 15ct. Byzantine church with old mural paintings, the Prophet Ilias summit and it’s remarkable hotels, the most traditional village of the island - Embona, and one of the most beautiful Medieval castle - Kritinia!
Sit back in our comfortable Midibus and enjoy Manos most scenic guided tour of Rhodes unspoiled countryside. There are so many things we want to tell and show you during this tour! We will be getting on and off exploring historical sites, uniquely lovely churches, abandoned monuments, mingle with locals and make unforgettable photographs. Begin your day with a visit to ELEOUSA village—built by Italians. It served as an army base with some 30,000 Italian soldiers. They have left behind a sanatorium building, a church, and a beautiful fountain that stores water brought from the mountains. You will then stop to explore the historic 15 ct. Byzantine church of St. NICOLAS FOUNDOUKLIS. As you admire the impressive Byzantine murals, you will learn the history of this unique monument. Continue the tour upwards the mountain PROPHET ELIAS, through a thick pine forest at an altitude 800m (2,624.67ft) and forget for a moment that you are in Rhodes! You will discover two luxury hotels named Elafos and Elafina (meaning the Doe and the Buck) designed in Alpine style and built between 1929 and 1932. They were used to host officials who visited the island, kings and governors would have their lunches and dinners there before going hunting! One of the hotels is renovated using as many original features, fixtures, and fittings from the early 30s as possible! Next to the hotels, you will also find a dilapidated Villa di Vecchi, which was the country home of an Italian governor. Enjoy your leisure time either exploring the area or have a fresh orange juice or coffee in the hotel square.
And off we go to Rhodes WINE DISTRICT! As we approach the lively village EMBONA, situated at the foot of Rhodes highest mountain Attavyros 1,215m (3,986.22ft), you will see vineyards and mountain slopes with vines, and learn about Rhodes’ wine industry and Rhodian grapes „Athiri” and „Amorgiano.” Rhodes has two Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wines. Did you know that Rhodes was the biggest wine exporter in the region as far back as the 7th c. BC? Let’s stop on the way and allow our taste buds a new discovery! Get an introduction to Rhodian wines and taste some of our most favorite ones. And of course, no-one leaves without tasting the strong local spirit „souma.” Yamas, my friend!!! We will then have some free leisure time either for lunch in a traditional village tavern (we are sure that tasty food smells will conquer even the least hungry person) or go further exploring little shops selling handicrafts made by local women. To continue with the tour, we have left our “desert” for the end! Let us WOW-you with one of the most breath-taking sites of the Western coastline—16 nearby islands into the endless Aegean blue horizon from the top of a medieval castle in KRITINIA! Take in the gorgeous vistas over the Aegean Sea as you imagine life for Knights who constructed the imposing castle.
