Guided tour: Ancient Kamiros + Kritinia Fortress
+ Embona – wine village + Mt. Filerimos
Let’s discover Rhodes’ West coast, the region with unique ancient monuments, fascinating medieval forts, and scenic countryside. Your friendly local tour guide will bring the rich history and culture to life in the mysterious ancient site Kamiros, the stunning well-preserved Kritinia’s fortress, the scenic Mt. Filerimos, and the cozy wine village of Embona. Be introduced to one of the best-preserved Classical Greek cities – the ancient Kamiros and have free time to admire the remains of a 3rd-century BC Doric temple, public baths, an altar to the Greek god Helios, the 6th-century BC Temple of Athena Polias, and a 206m (675ft) covered central walkway. Then, have a chance to explore a 14th-century AD fort erected by the Knights of St. John in Kritinia and get the best view of the west coastline and nearby islands of Halki, Alimia, Makri, and Tilos. Continue your day with a stop in Embona, a wine village, and have free time to taste local wines or have lunch in a village tavern. Then take another scenic drive through the countryside and learn about the ancient Ialysos city before you finish the day with unforgettable panoramic views from Mt. Filerimos and have fun watching peacocks surrounding the area.
Start the tour along the scenic West coast route that will take you to the main highlight of the day – the ancient Kamiros, one of the best-preserved Classical Greek cities.
Wander through its streets imagining what life in Rhodes must have been like in this ancient Doric settlement dating from the late bronze age until approx. 142 BC. You will gain insight from the tour guide into the city’s main functions and learn why it was abandoned.
You will continue the tour with a visit to Kritinia’s Fortress, founded by the Knights during the 14th century to overlook the west coast and nearby forts on Halki and Alimia islands.
Curious explorers will have a chance to climb all 96 steps to explore the fortification with half-intact walls and take in superb views.
Others can relax at the local cafe enjoying the view of the Island’s highest mountain – Attaviros, and the white houses of the neighboring Kritinia village.
We will then drive into the Rhodes wine region and stop at Embonas village for some leisure time on your own. You can have a filling lunch in a village tavern or wander around the village square tasting local wine & produce from little stalls and vendors.
On the return journey, we will drive up the spectacular Mt. Filerimos, once home to the oldest ancient city-state called Ialysos. Be welcomed by many peacocks naturally residing in the area.
After an introduction from the guide, enjoy some free time taking a short, scenic walk along the cobbled path leading to an imposing cross offering a stunning panoramic view.
You can also opt for a visit to the Byzantine Monastery and get the unique 7 Herbs Liquor made after the monks’ secret recipe before you return to the bus.
Throughout the day, you will hear interesting stories ranging from ancient mythology to the lifestyle of modern people. You’ll return to your hotel with more memories & photos than you ever thought possible in a day-long getaway.
The well-preserved ancient Doric city thrived during the 5th century BC and dominated the central-western section of the island. The archaeological site reveals the remains of a city, a characteristic example of Hellenistic urban layout and design.
ViewSituated at the cliff’s edge, the medieval fortress Kritinia offers a breathtaking view of the Western coastline.

RequestWe had a fantastic set of trips booked from manos going. Hassle free from booking at reception to a rep taking payment in advance giving us a run down of the days we booked. We would firstly like to thank all the staff/family on the Viking Royal they were so welcoming and friendly. The trip was so relaxing plus fun got to swim in a cave and snorkel had lunch and drink provided. A massive bonus for us was a small crowd on the boat and relaxing music unlike other packed boats and boom boom music. The captain was very knowledgeable been sailing since 1987 you’re in safe hands. He often sat with us talking away with his wife and daughter, daughters partner and nephew made it feel very personal loved it. Please thank them for us and know that they are doing a stella job for Manos going. Island...
Bizzle1986We were picked up from our hotel by our very friendly and informative guide for the day, Manos. The mini bus was clean and well air conditioned, and took us to some absolutely beautiful stops across the island with plenty of time at each stop to take the views in and get photographs. There was also the opportunity to taste some delicious local honey, wines and olive oil; as well as some traditional Greek dishes before our visit to Kritinia Castle. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and recommend the experience to anyone visiting Rhodes! Thank you! Freya & Ellis.
BladdeiraWell done Manos. This is great value and a wonderful trip. The recommended restaurant for lunch was excellent. Never tasted such wonderful Mousaka all home made. The guide Marrianne was so knowledgable and provided very interesting information. If you want to do a tour when in Rhodes this is the one. The alternative could be a full sized coach with 60 passengers.
Ann WWe were recommended by friends to see Manos for our day trips having been on several on their visits to Rhodes. We went to see Manos & Gunta who were incredibly friendly and couldn’t do enough for us, offering us the Rhodes Island Tour on the Friday. Our guide, Marianne was incredibly knowledgeable and she claims she talks too much but she knew so much about the island, the history and the different parts – we were more than happy to listen! The driver was polite & friendly too doing well to navigate the narrow roads up the mountain! The tour itself stopped at various points of interest; an abandoned village, a beautiful fountain, hunters lodge, vineyard, mountain village for lunch and a stunning hilltop castle with panoramic views across the islands. My favourite part of the tour was definitely the local wine, honey and olive oil tasting midway through...
